Domain Registration
Your Personal Web Address
Once you've decided you want a Web presence, the next step is
to obtain a domain name (www.yourname.com).
Your Domain Name Search
Once you've decided on your domain name, you need to perform a domain
name search. This search checks the Internet and tells you if your
chosen domain name is available. If the name has been taken, you
will need to think of an acceptable alternative and research that
name. If the domain name you have selected is not being used by
someone else, you are ready to register your domain name.
Domain Name Registration
Domain name registration is a relatively painless process. To
register your domain name, go to the
InterNIC
or
Network
Solutions Website. Both offer registration for all the popular
suffixes, such as .com, .net, .org, .us, and .name (these are known
as top-level domain names).
You'll pay around $35 per year for the domain name. We can do the
registration for you if you wish.
Once you have your domain name, you are ready to create a site.
Then you will need a domain host.
If you aren't quite ready for a Website yet, you don't need a hosting
service at this time. You may be in a situation where you have the
perfect domain name for your business and know you want a site in
the future, but now just isn't the time. To secure your domain name
for future use, you can reserve the domain name. In addition to
the domain registration fee, you would pay a small one-time fee
to Network Solutions and that's it! Later, when you are ready to
get a site going, your domain name will be ready and waiting!
